2008 Off to a Great Start
Congressman Barney Frank continues to gain support for his online casinos
gambling proposal which seeks to neutralize the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act (UIGEA). Frank has steadily gained momentum on his bill over the
past nearly year since he first announced the specifics of the Internet Gambling
Regulation and Enforcement Act (IGREA). Franks legislation though is highly
controversial and lies at the heart of the current debated over the U.S.’s
current online casinos gambling legislation.
The international internet gambling community as well as many groups in the
United States are calling for the licensing and regulation of the online casino
gambling industry. But at the same time, now that the ban has passed (though
fairly unintentionally by many politicians) it will take much longer for
Congress to reverse the effects of the UIGEA.
As for Frank’s proposed legislation, his proposal is viewed as a solid effort to
effectively manage the dangers associated with online casinos gambling while
keeping the U.S. out of the hot-seat with the World Trade Organisation, the EU,
and other powerful nations. Just this past week Frank’s proposal gained another
Congressman’s vote of support, bringing the total political supporters to 47 –
not too bad considering Frank has been seeking support for less than a year.
The newcomer supporting the online casinos gambling licensing and regulation is
Congressman Tim Bishop, a New York State Democrat. This latest addition to
Frank’s list of supporters indicates that 2008 is off to a positive start and
that Frank and his aides are still actively seeking to neutralize the UIGEA.
Additionally support on his legislation will also prove important when Frank
speaks at a House hearing next month.
