You Won't Gamble There
The United Kingdom is running into some major snafoos now that it is beginning
to license as many as 16 land casinos in the UK. The current UK government has
severely altered some of the previous plans for the land gambling industry –
namely a plan to open a supercasino in Manchester. Prime Minister Gordon Brown
opposed the supercasino when he came into office and thus nixed the approval
shortly after Manchester was awarded the supercasino license. The current
gambling climate in the UK is actually very interesting because the government
is largely critical and unsupportive of the land gambling and gaming industries,
yet has one of the most liberal governments in terms of online casinos.
As much as the government plans to license 16 casinos though, the locals have
other plans. Scotland is slated to receive on of the licenses – the small town
of Stranraer, Scotland was awarded the license, which promptly began outrage and
protest from not only the local citizens, but also the Church of Scotland
opposes the opening of even a small land gambling venue because of the
implications and negative social effects it could have Scottish gamblers.
The main argument against the small land casino is revolves around the argument
that though the economy in the town could use a lift, gambling is not the only
solution – and definitely not the most ideal solution. Reverend Alex Currie
remarks on the situation, “We feel that it is our duty as part of the Christian
community in Wigtownshire to state publicly that gambling should not be regarded
as the tool that will bring our community the economic regeneration it desires.”
With so many of the local communities protesting the new land casino licenses,
many companies are now reconsidering. There is so much hostility centered on the
casino venues that some developers wonder if the community animosity will
outweigh the profits in the long-run.
