Land Casino Turmoil
Operating within the land casino gambling industry can often cause just as much
of a headache as operating online casinos. Recent litigation between a Hong Kong
businessman and the massive Las Vegas Sands Corporation resulted in a very large
settlement in favor of the businessman. The Sands Corporation operates casinos
in both Las Vegas and in the burgeoning Macau market – the company’s move into
the Macau gambling industry is what has specifically come into question during
the lawsuit that ended just last week with the courts ruling.
Online casino gambling is not currently fully legalized throughout Asia, but as
a first step toward opening the Asian gambling market, the small island of Macau
as become a gambling mecca, drawing gamblers from all over the world to
experience the unique destination and many land casino resort choices. Just
eight years ago the Sands Corp was looking for a way into the Macau gambling
market – specifically looking to secure a license to operate land casinos in
Macau. The Sands then hired businessman Richard Suen to assist with securing the
licensing by using Suens unique relationship and contacts with the Chinese
government.
Although Suen was not employed by the Sands Corp at the time that the company
was award a land casino gambling license, the courts agreed with Suen that his
contact were instrumental in securing the licensing deal in Macau. And since the
Sands had not year paid Suen for his assistance in the matter, the courts
awarded the Hong Kong businessman $43.8 million in compensation. |
