Turkey Case Going to Trial
More than two dozen Sportingbet employees are now facing trial in Turkey
according to the latest information released by the Turkish authorities.
Sportingbet is a prominent online casino sportsbetting company in the UK and
European markets. Just two weeks about the Turkish authorities raided
Sportingbet’s Turkish subsidiary, Superbahis.com, and arrested 39 people and
confiscating thousands of computers, hard drives, memory sticks, CDs, and other
information allegedly involved in illegally operating online casinos out of
Turkey. The Turkish government has already sorted through some of the evidence,
along with evaluating those the authorities had taken into custody, and to that
end, 11 individuals were released from custody.
But that is where the good news ends. Two of the 39 individuals are Sportingbet
employees from the UK that were in Turkey on holiday. They are still in custody
though and are among the 28 employees of the online casino sportsbetting company
that will face trial in the coming weeks and months.
The Turkish authorities had apparently observed and investigated the
Superbahis.com operations for several months before the raid. Through the
investigation and the confiscation of the company’s records, the Turkish
authorities believe that Sportingbet was illegally processing transactions for
online casinos and gamblers through foreign bank accounts. Those still in
custody are under investigation by the Turkish Board for Financial Crimes
Investigation (MASAK) at this point and it looks as though this case could cause
a major uproar in the European gambling industry.
Sportingbet is still in recovery after withdrawing from the U.S. online casinos
industry and the trouble with the Turkish government could cause long-term
financial stability concerns for the company. |
