Sentencing Announced for Operator
Operating illegal internet gambling in the United States is getting more
dangerous by the day for the illegal operators. Although criminal activity is
nothing new, especially not in the betting, bookmaking, and gambling industries,
when the prohibition of online casino gambling in the United States, it seems
that more and more underground operations are illegally taking bets. The latest
case is actually several years old, but the courts have finally announced the
sentencing for the New Jersey internet betting operator, Vincent Filipelli.
Filipelli, known as Big Vince through his online casino betting operation, just
finished serving a five-year sentence and is looking at another 3-4 years in
state prison.
Filipelli plead guilty to operating an internet-based betting operation - and
though the charges he faced for inter-state racketeering are severe, his longer
sentence came from threats he issued to an undercover police officer. Filipelli
met the individual in person and threatened the undercover officer because of
unpaid betting debt owned to the online casino betting operation. Filipelli
didn’t go beyond verbally threatening the officer, but that was enough to land
him in a federal prison for five years. The threats were caught on both video
and audio tape – there was no way that Filipelli could get around the charges,
although his lawyers sought a lower sentence, arguing that Filipelli never
intended on acting on the threats, but merely used the threats as a way to
ensure payment from a gambling debt.
Regardless though of the argument, Filipelli will remain in prison thanks to the
latest charges related directly to his online casino betting operation. The
national media have really latched on to this case, as it is one of the first of
many internet-related arrests and prosecutions that are scheduled for the coming
years. |
