Preventing Problem Gambling At the Online Casinos
The South Korean online casino gambling industry is facing some much stricter
regulations and restrictions from the Korean government. The Korean government
has already put regulations in place that limit the amount of money that
internet gamblers can spend either online or at the land casinos, but like any
restriction, there are usually ways around the law. To address those who are
circumventing the law the Korean government is developing legislation that would
severely fine, and potentially imprison those who circumvent the monthly
limitations on gambling monies.
South Korea has a large land casino gambling industry – 17 venues throughout
South Korea offer gamblers a variety of slot machines and table games. The
government has currently set a cap of $290 a month that they can gamble. But
prevalence and pervasiveness of the online casino gambling industry presents a
problem for Korean officials – gamblers are able to spend more than the $290
maximum and the government is unable to effectively track the transactions.
Internet gaming and gambling is extremely popular in South Korea – the nation
has entire internet cafes and public internet video arcades set up to tap into
the growing online gaming market. The Korean government though has strict limits
in place as a way to prevent problem and addictive gamblers from exploitation
from the land and online casinos. Current legislation and restrictions are
becoming ineffective, so Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has proposed
that those violating the $290 monthly maximum of funds gambled could face a
$20,000 fine as well as two years in prison. These new laws may seem a bit
harsh, but the Korean government feels the fine prison sentence might be enough
of a threat to deter illegal online casino gambling activities. |
