Opposition in Australia
The Australian online casino gambling market has been shaky at best over the
past several years. As internet gambling becomes increasingly pervasive, the
individual regions within Australia have had difficulties regulated foreign
gambling operators. Now that interactive TV gambling has begun, some politicians
are taking a second look at the internet gambling industry. Australian gamblers
are increasingly using the internet to place bets through the online casinos –
this has caught the eye of Australian Opposition MP Bruce Billson who recently
introduces a private member’s Bill specifically aimed at the internet and
interactive TV gambling mediums.
News that Billson is investigating interactive and online casino gambling in
Australia has some in the industry very alarmed. Not only does Billson’s bill
look to reexamine specific forms of gambling in the country, but sources report
that Billson is looking to completely ban forms these forms of gambling.
Australia is experiencing a surge in problem gamblers in the state, and
according to some of Billson’s supporters, this bill will effectively curtail
the rise in gambling through interactive television and the online casino
betting sites.
For Two Way Interactive Television, Billson’s ban would act as a death-sentence
for the company. Two Way has only recently fully launched the company’s pay TV
interactive gambling services, and a ban at this point would be detrimental to
the company’s viability. The CEO at Two Way is quite infuriated by Billson’s
bill, and notes, “I think what they're doing is a stunt and it won't have any
benefit for problem gamblers at all.”
That is the chief argument from those in the online casino industry in
opposition to the bill – a ban is ineffective, just look at the U.S. and other
regions with gambling bans in place. Instead of banning the activity the
government should look into further regulating the industry as a safeguard for
problem and underage gamblers. |
