More Arrests for Online Casinos Industry
It has not made international headlines, but the latest arrests in Kuala Lumpur
are certainly startling. Just weeks ago two individuals vacationing in Turkey
were arrested for their involvement with the online casino gambling industry.
The latest arrests are for the same reason – one or more Victor Chandler
employees are currently being held in Kuala Lumpur as the Malaysian government
investigates the online casinos involvement in bringing internet gaming into
Malaysia. What is alarming though is that the international media has failed to
report on the issue, nor has Victor Chandler released a press statement
concerning the incident.
Online casino gambling is still very illegal in many regions around the world.
Although countries throughout Europe and some in South America have embraced
internet gambling, much of the South Pacific region still has restrictions
against the online casinos – and in some cases land gambling is also banned. As
for the current case though, the PR representative for Victor Chandler, Phil
Hall, commented that the Malaysian offices are used as “a customer service
center, an I.T. center, and has never been used for any sort of gambling or the
taking of bets. It is therefore not in breach of any Malaysian gambling laws.”
Victor Chandler is involved in the European online casino gambling and
sportsbetting industry and the company’s business model does not involve
operating the gambling side of the business out of Malaysia. But with the
increasing pervasiveness of online gambling on the international front, this is
not the first time that government officials have resorted to arrests as a way
to confirm that business based in the country are not operating internet
casinos. |
