Betting on Living
If you were diagnosed with a terminal illness, would you bet on living longer
than the doctors’ predictions? An online gambler from the UK had a feeling he
could live longer than the doctors diagnosis, so he decided to check out his
odds at the Will Hill land and online casino gambling company. Will Hill is one
of the largest bookmakers in the UK, and the company took stock of all of the
information related to the 58 year-old gambler’s medical information and offered
him 50-1 odds of living longer than 25 months.
The online casino gambler, Jon Matthews, was told that he wouldn’t live to see
the next Christmas, let alone live another two years, once he was diagnosed with
cancer. Mesothelioma is a type of cancer linked with exposure to asbestos – and
according to doctors no patient diagnosed with Mesothelioma has lived more than
25 months. Matthews though “[didn’t] feel too bad, so [he] got hold of William
Hill.”
The odds were 50-1 that he could beat out the doctors prognosis, but Matthews as
willing to bet GBP 100 that he could live longer than the 25 month prediction.
More than two years later, Matthews is still alive and walked away with GBP
5,000 in winnings from his bet. Matthews though doesn’t plan to keep all of the
winnings, he has donated half to charity and will use the other half for
himself.
Betting on yourself in a life or death situation is certainly not commonplace at
the online casinos and bookmakers, but Will Hill accepted the odds, and lived up
to its end of the bargain by promptly paying out the GBP 5,000 in winnings. |
