A Tough Jury
Online casino gambling and betting in China may have been lucrative for the
alleged individuals involved, but with Chinese internet gambling restrictions
very stringent, those involved could face some serious consequences if the
courts and jury find the defendants guilty. The Chinese internet gambling market
is slowly growing more tolerant of forms of internet gaming – but online casinos
and betting sites are still straight-out illegal. The Chinese media are
currently having a field day with the trial of twenty individuals involved in an
illegal internet betting ring.
The twenty implicated in the gambling ring are just a fraction of those actually
involved running the large-scale online casino gambling and betting ring.
According to the current information, two brothers began a land gambling venue
in Myanmar, and then decided to extend those services to include internet
betting to Chinese bettors. Considering the restrictions and regulations in
place to prevent online casinos from accessing Chinese gamblers, the two
brothers then set up a network of servers in other locations, banks offering the
company accounts, and other illegal activities that facilitated the roughly US
$1.24 billion in wagers in the eight months the gambling ring was up and
running.
Twenty individuals are now facing trial in the case but the online casino
betting ring employed close to 2,000 individuals in varying regions around
China. The trial began just last week and will continue into the coming weeks as
both side bring testimony and witnesses forward. The media are heavily following
the case, as is the international internet casino gambling industry – the
severity of the judgment will potentially indicate if the Chinese government is
leaning toward a more liberal internet gambling climate. |
