Harsh Advertising Restrictions in Australia
Australia is in a development phase right now in terms of cultivating an
inclusive, effective and regulated land and online casino betting industry.
Because Australia is broken up into individual autonomous regions foreign
internet gambling and betting companies have encountered severe difficulties
entering and competing in the Australian internet gambling market. Online
casinos and betting sites have been taken to court in most of the regions, and
though the courts uphold the right of foreign betting operators to offer
services to Australian bettors, the severe advertising restrictions mean that
some internet betting companies are resorting to other tactics to brand
themselves and build a player-base.
The latest issue comes out of advertising techniques but the Sportsbet online
casino betting company. Sportsbet is able to operate in the Australian market,
however the company has had a hard time even letting players know that the site
exists. Australian advertising restrictions limit the ability of the site to
even effectively advertise through the internet, let alone via mainstream media.
The company’s use of cold calling Australians is extremely controversial right
now and some Australian authorities have vowed to put a stop to cold calling.
The Gaming and Racing Minister in New South Wales, Graeme West, is initiating
efforts that would make cold calling by online casino gambling companies
illegal. He feels that the practice is irresponsible on the part of the betting
company, and that the calls have the potential to reach underage and problem
gamblers.
The CEO of Sportsbet, Matthew Tripp, acknowledges that the calls may reach
underage and problem gamblers, but he goes on to stress that the company has a
system in place to thoroughly check the individuals signing up for the online
casino betting site. “Anyone who takes up an account gets put through the
wringer by Sportsbet and we do full checks on them - credit checks, we ensure
that they are who they say they are,” remarks Tripp. He surmises that the
company’s extensive checks and review process effectively guard against youth
and problem gamblers. |
