Following in the Steps of the UK
Irish gambling and betting could just take a turn for the better (or worse
depending on your point of view really) but for the land and online casinos
gambling industry, the ability to legally operate land gambling venues in the
country comes as a welcome turning point. The United Kingdom has one of the most
liberal land and online casino gambling industries on the planet, and
accorinding to recent media reports, the Irish government is considering
launching a regulated land gambling industry in select areas. Ireland is
currently home to an extensive land and online betting industry – sites like
Paddy Power offer gamblers a slew of unique gambling opportunities, and the
latest news could mean thriving land casinos are in the near future.
The initial reports come out of The Irish Times, which have indicated that the
Minister of Justice, Dermot Ahern, is seriously considering updating the
country’s outdated legislation. The currently land and online casino gambling
industry is a huge source of potential revenue for the government coffers if
approved. Governments all over the world are turning toward regulated gambling
as an effective way to fund state coffers – Ireland just might be next in line
for some updated gambling policies.
While land casinos are currently illegal in Ireland, there are certainly forms
of land gambling in the country by way of private clubs and the such. The new
legislation and regulations would simply add some structure and restrictions to
this market. Ahern noted, “We are past the day when we can outlaw them. What we
need to do is regulate them in a way that is fair.”
Moves to fully regulate and outline a nation’s land and online casino gambling
policies comes from increasing pressure from the European Commission for an open
gambling market between all EU member-states. In addition to merely needing to
update the legislation to reflect the current technology and social and economic
needs, pressure from the Commission could be a factor in Ahern’s decision to
liberalize the country’s stance on gambling.
