Online Casino Gamblers Find a Way
Singapore gambling research has proven the same conclusion that research in the
United States concluded – where there is a will there is a way. Although the
U.S. and Singapore both have banned foreign online casinos, citizens are finding
a way to gamble anyway. The internet is an extremely pervasive medium and even
militaristic governments like Myanmar just cannot seem to effectively block
certain sites and types of internet activity. Singapore has legalized only two
companies in the country to offer land gambling services to Singapore citizens,
but the foreign online casino gambling sites accept Singapore gamblers, so
despite the legislation and regulations, the gamblers are finding ways to bet
and gambling online.
Recent research on the Singapore internet gambling market indicates that online
casino gambling and betting activities are increasing, and because of the
restrictions on foreign bettors, the Singapore government does not receive a
dime of tax revenue from the foreign gambling sites. The increase in gambling is
actually quite startling – ten times the number of Singapore gamblers heading to
the online casinos from just three years earlier. There is no doubting that
internet gambling has increased in popularity all over the globe in the past
several years, but the tenfold increase in a country with legislation banning
online gambling is certainly startling.
The Ministry for Community Development Youth and Sports released the latest
statistics showing that while only 0.1 percent of respondents polled in 2005
participated in some form of online casino gambling, the 2008 results indicated
that roughly 1 percent of the Singapore population finds a way around
restrictions on internet gambling. |
