Finally Addressing Underage Gambling
Finland has one of the lowest age limits for gambling activities in Europe – and
really in the world. Most countries have set 18 as the minimum age to
participate in land and online casino gambling activities, but Finnish law
traditionally allows gamblers as young as 15 access to gambling machines and
other forms of land gambling. The land and online casino gambling industry is
growing extensively and foreign operators are pushing for entry into the Finnish
gambling market. Add to that a global concern about the long-term negative
effects of underage gambling, and the Finnish government a tad bit late on
raising the gambling age – but at least within a year the law will come into
full effect.
The Finnish government has already fully approved the new legislation and the
new minimum age for gambling will take effect over the next year. The Veikkaus
land and online casino gambling monopoly along with and venues with gambling
machines will slowly transition to the new age limits with full enforcement a
requirement with the year. Underage gambling is cropping up as a problem all
over the world but strict and firm regulations are the best way to protect
vulnerable youth gamblers.
Luckily, as the land and internet gambling and betting industries really spreads
into the Finnish gambling market, the European online casinos will have no
trouble conforming to the legislation. European gambling companies already have
effecitive safeguards in place to block underage gamblers – and Finnish gambling
age is now in line much of the rest of the world – some places have even risen
the gambling age to 21!
The Finnish government stresses that the raising of the gambling age was
necessary and that the authorities will prosecute any land and online casino
betting companies not incompliance by the specified date. |
