PPA Backs Proposed Bill
As controversy over HR 5767 mounts, the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) asked its
million-plus members to show support for the bill. The PPA is firmly in support
of most of Congressman Barney Frank’s proposed legislation pertaining to the
U.S. online casino gambling industry. Just two months ago Congressman Barney
Frank and Ron Paul introduced HR 5767, a bill that would stop the U.S.
Department of Justice and authorities from finalizing support regulations for
the controversial Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). HR 5767
and the King Amendment are up for debate at this week at the House Financial
Services Committee and the PPA urges all of the members to take the time to
voice the support of the bill to their state representative.
The bill is a key part of the long process of legalizing, licensing, and
regulating the online casino gambling industry and with the strong opposition
from the religious right, the bill could use some serious support from PPA
members. The PPA formally requested that members contact their representative
this week. As for why the PPA officially supports HR 5767, PPA Chairman Alfonse
D’Amato noted in his email to the PPA members, “The UIGEA regulations will
demand that banks block "unlawful internet gambling" but there is no definition
of this vague term. Banks will be forced to block millions of transactions that
are not in fact illegal. As a result, you may not be able to play poker or any
other game of skill online.” HR 5767 on the other hand will stop the UIGEA
regulations from causing a “regulatory nightmare,” and the accompanying King
Amendment demands the precise definition of internet gambling and what
constitutes an illegal online casino.
Although the Committee may address HR 5767 on Tuesday, June 24, 2008, the low
priority of the bill on the agenda may push it back to Wednesday. |
