Not in Accord
The Swedish government is treading on thin water right now with an ongoing
dispute against the Betsson gambling group. Betsson is a Swedish-based online
casino gambling group that operates betting and gambling services primarily in
the European market. Sweden and as many as ten other nations are violating EU
trade policies by enforcing protectionist state monopolies that specifically
prevent competing land and online casinos from accessing the nation’s gambling
market. Betsson recently challenged the Swedish authorities by opening a land
betting shop in Stockholm. The Swedish Gaming Board took exception to the
blatant move against the Svenske Spel monopoly and is now planning to fine
Betsson for the land betting shop.
The problem though comes down to the fact that land online casino gambling
monopolies are short lived in Sweden and other countries. The European
Commission is placing heavy pressure on the nations to put a stop to
protectionist legislation and instead pass more inclusive gambling regulations
that allow foreign online casinos fair access to the market. Additionally,
besides the Commission, Swedish authorities and the Swedish courts question
monopolistic gaming policy. Previous cases and disputes concerning the law were
addressed by both the Swedish appeals court and the Swedish Supreme Courts –
neither of the courts was able to come to a firm conclusion on the questionable
lottery laws.
With all of the controversy surrounding the Swedish land and online casino
gambling laws, Betsson contends that the Gaming Board has no real case to stand
upon and continue prosecution. If the company is fined, there is every reason to
believe that Betsson will take the issue all the way through the Swedish courts. |
