Selective Online Casino Prosecution
It is time for the United States to face the music and answer some very tough
questions that will be posed by a delegation from the European Union that is
specifically coming to the U.S. to investigate online casino gambling policies.
The U.S. has encountered some serious problems over the past year-and-a half in
relation to the highly controversial UIGEA – nations all over the world and even
the WTO have questioned the U.S.’s right to pass such a flawed and
discriminatory piece of legislation. EU officials have been in talks with
reluctant US Trade Representatives over the past several months and those
non-productive talks and unanswered questions have resulted in the current EU
delegation that is in the U.S. to address inconsistencies in the UGIEA and other
federal legislation related to online casino gambling.
The EU delegation sent a questionnaire to U.S. officials just a month ago
addressing some of the areas of concern – the questionnaire featured some very
pointed concerns and questions that could have presumably shed some light on the
online casino gambling issue. Unfortunately though the USTR took the defensive
approach and outright refused to answer any of the questions, merely stating
that the USTR and the EU had already resolved the online casino gambling issue
through trade compensation negotiations last year.
That answer hasn’t really flown with the EU officials appointed to investigate
the U.S. gambling laws – online casinos in Europe want answers to some very
specific questions and the EU delegation has traveled to the U.S. to figure out
the answers. A primary concern though and tops on the list is the blatant
discrimination and prosecution of only offshore and foreign online gambling
companies from the U.S. government. European licensed gambling companies want to
know why they are targeted.
The investigation is in the beginning stages and according to Eli Lehrer, the
investigation will cover “...some gambling laws that rank among some the worst
written sections of the United States Code.” More updates as the EU delegates
get answers to their pointed questions. |
