Questionable Raffle for Obama
The state of Minnesota is taking ridiculous to new levels with the state’s
concern over an Obama fundraising raffle that may allegedly be illegal. Many
states have specific restrictions on the regulations and specifications
surrounding land and online casino gambling, lotteries, sweepstakes, and
raffles, but new headlines in Minnesota can only lead one to shake their head.
The Minnesota Gambling Control Board has announced that the government and the
Control Board are investigating a new promotion from the Obama campaign that
acts as a raffle – something that is only legal for non-profit organizations in
the state.
Basically, the U.S. is just bound and determined to nickel and dime the land and
online casino gambling regulations to death – and the Minnesota State government
is no different. Obama’s current promotion encourages supports to donate a sum
of money to his campaign ($5 through $2,300), and as an added benefit, one of
the lucky donors will win a chance to meet Obama first hand when he is appearing
in Denver, Colorado.
The problem arises because of the raffle nature of the promotion says the
Minnesota Gaming Control Board – because there is a fee to enter the raffle (a
donation) and the winners are chosen by chance, the promotion falls under the
guidelines of a promotion. The Obama campaign though has successfully avoided
all encounters involving land and online casino gambling, and we suspect that
this run-in with raffle gambling will be soon neutralized. The campaign
responded to the Board noting that there was no element of sheer chance involved
because the winner would be chosen based on the merit of the entry and the
accompanying story. |
