Strengthening the Online Casino Gambling Punishments
China is entering a new phase of enforcement now as evidenced by a the
sentencing in a high profile court case that involved 42 individuals convicted
of operating an illegal online casino gambling ring. The convicted leader of the
gambling ring faces a harsh sentence while others convicted of working for and
supporting the gambling ring have also faced historically harsh sentences in the
case. Basically is seems as though the Chinese courts are interested in sending
out the message that gambling at online casinos and betting through illegal
gambling rings is still illegal no matter how much the foreign gambling
companies allege that the Asian market is the next big explosion for online
gambling.
The gambling ring in question was busted at the beginning of the year and 42
individuals in the gambling ring were arrested and have been convicted in the
case. The police have officially convicted the leader of the online casino
gambling ring, Yang Xu, who now faces lengthy 15-year prison sentence as well as
owing $5.8 million. Others in the group include some of Xu’s family members who
worked for the gambling ring and helped Xu funnel the money out of the
government’s watchful eye.
Of the 42 individuals who were convicted alongside of Xu for their involvement
in the online casino gambling ring, 25 were double convicted in the case, which
according to a Chinese judicial worker signals that “the nation has strengthened
punishments for online gambling.” The 25 convicted face charges of both running
an internet gambling ring as well as operating an illegal business. |
