Where's the Justice?
The U.S. legal system is sometimes just too ridiculous for words. The Texas
police have announced a new raid – this makes it the second raid in just a
matter of weeks in Texas. Apparently two individuals were involved in a phone
card based online casino gambling ring at an internet café. The previous
gambling bust was a raid on a private residence that was allegedly used for
taking U.S. bets and processing the bets through an offshore online casino
company based out of Costa Rica. The Internet café though used phone cards to
load money for the players who were then able to used the phone cards on
specific gambling sites and then collect their gambling winnings from the café.
The ridiculous part of this whole equation comes into play when one looks at the
charges that the two individuals are facing in the case – Class A misdemeanor
offenses if they are convicted. Now consider that individual online casino
gamblers in Washington State face a Class C felony offense for just gambling at
an internet gambling site from their home, and it begs the question, where is
the justice in the U.S.? Gambling at the online casinos is a felony offense in
one state, but full on breaking the law and operating an illegal gambling ring
only classifies as a misdemeanor – it really just boggles the mind.
According to the police reports, only two individuals are currently facing
charges for operating the online casino gambling ring, although police
confiscated large amounts of data. More than 30 computers were confiscated for
analysis, and one of the individual’s houses was also warranted for a police
search. The case will could progress to other charges once the police
investigate where the individuals were funneling the $25 to $30 grand a week,
but at this point, barring further incriminating evidence, the two are looking
at misdemeanor charges. |
