How Did the Vote Go Down
Everyone in the online casino and poker gambling industries are aware of the
fact that HR 5767 was defeated last month – but the political maneuvering behind
the vote is less well apparent. Just last week a representative from the RTG
internet gambling news portal spoke with both Representative Robert Wexler and
Alfonse D’Amato, the head of the Poker Players Alliance. D’Amato and Wexler are
both proponents for legalizing U.S. access to offshore online casinos and poker
gambling sites. The U.S. currently bans foreign companies from accessing the
U.S. market through the implementation of the UGIEA.
HR 5767 was a bi-partisan effort between Barney Frank and Ron Paul to stop the
development and implementation of regulations what will support and enforce the
UIGEA. The bill failed thanks to a tie vote – but interestingly enough both Paul
and D’Amato were positive about the results of the vote. Although the tie vote
of 32-32 means that the bill failed to pass, according to Wexler the vote “shows
that awareness of the absurdity of the status quo has never been greater.”
Wexler is a big supporter of the internet poker industry in particular and his
proposed bill specifically address how the UIGEA affects internet poker, with no
real mention of the matching ban on online casino gambling activities.
The vote on HR 5767 was just the first attempt and basically the fact hat 32
members of Congress oppose the implantation of UIGEA enforcement regulations is
heartening for the online casino and poker gambling industries. Giving hope to
some in the industry is a comment from D’Amato, “There's a good chance we're
going to re-introduce the measure before Congress goes into recess.” From now
until a possible reintroduction of the bill (or a similar bill) the PPA will
undoubtedly continue to lobby Congress in attempts to heighten the awareness of
the U.S. online gambling issue. |
