Boosting a Flagging Economy
Harrah’s Entertainment’s decision to move the World Series of Poker event to the
summer months could be just what the Las Vegas strip needed to recover some of
the dwindling profits at the land casinos. The annual WSOP event is the largest
and most prestigious land poker tournaments in the world – the event draws
thousands of participants from all over the world to Las Vegas for more than a
month in order to participate in one of the more than 50 smaller events that
lead up to the heated Main Event and Final Table Event. The WSOP not only draws
land poker enthusiasts, but online casinos from all over the world also send
gamblers to the event. That, coupled with international media could be just what
Las Vegas needed to pull itself out of its economic slump.
The summer is the traditional slow season for the land and online casinos and
Harrah’s Entertainment chose to move the WSOP event into the months of June and
July this year as a way to boost the Las Vegas economy during these months. Las
Vegas land casino venues have expressed serious concern over the state of the
U.S. economy in recent months and many of the major international gambling
brands are even reporting unprecedented losses associated with the slowing U.S.
ecomony. Industry analysts are all waiting the reports from the land casinos
about the effect of the WSOP on casino revenues.
Many predicted that the WSOP event would at least provide a temporary respite
for the casinos considering the fact that so many visitors, online gamblers,
poker competitors and spectators flooded the city last month. Casinos on the Las
Vegas Strip have reported 5 straight months on declines in revenues and
indications that the venues were well below revenue from the same time the
previous year. |
