They'll Find a Way
The Thai government focused a lot of police attention on stopping land and
online betting on the 2008 Euro Championship – and even with nearly 1,100
individuals arrested for gambling offenses analysts predict that the arrests and
raids do not even touch the tip of the iceberg. Sports and betting fanatics all
over the world followed the just-ended Euro 2008 football championship games
with interest and money – and it really doesn’t matter what their local
government had to say about the whole situation. Now that the Euro 2008 has
ended, Thai police have announced the total figures for this year’s illegal land
and online casino betting season.
The government in Thailand used a special task force over the past several weeks
in attempts to really put a stop to the heavy land and online casino betting
rings that were cropping up everywhere. And while some might observe that the
taskforce barely made a dent in the amount of total betting that took place in
the country, the police were able to confiscate more than $30,000 in betting
monies, in addition to 1,098 people arrested for involvement in the land and
online casino betting rings.
The police raids and arrests led to the confiscation of roughly $15.7 million in
betting slips – only a small portion of the $1.2 billion that analysts predict
Thai gamblers spent on the Euro 2008. The fact is, although the Thai government
continues to ban land and online casino betting and gambling activities citizens
are able to circumvent the ban by using gambling and betting rings, or at least
heading over the border to gamble. |
