Better Gambling Policies Desired
The Canadian online casino gambling industry has been a source for much
controversy over the past six months because of heated debate from the Kahnawake
tribe, the Canadian government, and the Canadian horseracing industry. Canada
has a large regulated land gambling industry and internet gambling is
technically taboo, although the regulations have never been enforced in the
country. The horseracing industry though is taking exception to the lack of
government taxing and regulations on the online casinos operating in the
Canadian market and have demanded changes. And while the Canadian government has
remained close-lipped on future plans for the online gambling industry a
University professor in the country is advocating a safe licensed and regulated
gambling industry.
There are skeptics all over the world who assert that gambling at the online
casinos is a detriment to citizens and should be banned… but others argue that
just as the land gambling industry is regulated, so too should be the internet
gambling industry. June Cotte is an associate professor at the University of
Western Ontario, specifically teaching within the Richard Ivey School of
Business. Cotte’s opinion on the situation aligns with advocates in the U.S. who
claim that legitimate and established corporations offering gambling solutions
from the online casinos can properly protect individuals from exploitation and
can create a safe gaming environment.
While gambling opponents call for a complete ban on the activity, Cotte
observes, “Just as legalised commercial gambling in casinos allows governments
to regulate it, so, too, could the legalisation of online gambling allow for
better regulation and attempts to reduce the growth of problem gamblers.”
Canadian legislators have the opportunity to not only benefit from an industry
that will exist with or without proper regulations, but to also protect its
citizens by licensing quality companies to operate in the Canadian online
gambling industry.
