RANT: Why are we Content?
A recent quote from Lee Trevino, a golfing professional in the United States
brings up a very valid point – why is the government content to sit by and lose
out on tax revenue from the lucrative U.S. online casino gambling industry. The
UIGEA was designed as a way to ban foreign internet casinos from accessing the
U.S. market – and although the enforcement regulations have not yet been
implemented, the act is flawed and has little hope of ever truly blocking the
internet gambling industry from U.S. players. Trevino observes that the IRS
spends huge funds to track down illegal online gamblers and could instead be
receiving a portion of the gambler’s winnings if the industry was simply
legalized and well regulated.
Trevino observed to ESPN, “We gamble billions of dollars in this country, and
the Internal Revenue Service doesn't get a dime. Instead, they spend millions of
dollars trying to catch these [online casino gambling] people.” This is a
sentiment felt by both gamblers and non-gamblers – why is the land gambling
industry heavily taxed but the unregulated online casino gambling industry is
left in a nebulous state where the operators are able to pocket huge portions of
the revenue from the U.S. market because there are no regulations in place for
the industry.
Some in the industry have noted that state governments in the U.S. could receive
as much as $40 billion in tax revenue over the course of a decade if the
industry were properly licensed and regulated. It’s just incredible to think
that the U.S. so obviously approves of gambling – just look at the flourishing
land gambling industry, the success of internet horserace betting, Fantasy
Football leagues, and other pro-gambling industries. Why is the online gambling
industry so negatively targeted? It is a baffling question and many online
casino gambling supporters are hoping that increased lobbying efforts and an
increased awareness on the issue will lead to positive change. |
