Charitable Poker Players
The online casinos and poker gambling sites have really begun to place a
spotlight on charitable activities in the past year. Although there are several
internet gambling companies that have made philanthropy and supporting charities
a cornerstone of the company’s business practices, others are only just
beginning to put focus on some of the international humanitarian crises. Some of
the recent efforts have included several online casino gambling sites collecting
funds for the earthquake survivors in China, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation,
along with support from poker gamblers for the crises in Darfur. The annual
“Ante Up for Africa” poker tournament just concluded and the event was able to
raise hundreds of thousands to support humanitarian efforts in Darfur.
The second annual “Ante Up for Africa” poker tournament just concluded at the
Rio casino in Las Vegas. The event uses celebrities and land and online casino
poker professionals to raise awareness and funds for the Darfur crises in
particular. Founded by Don Cheadle and Annie Duke, the event donates proceeds to
the NOOW project (Not on Out Watch). This year’s event took place during the Las
Vegas World Series of Poker and featured some of the biggest names in the land
and online casino poker gambling industry. Also at the table were major
celebrities – all of the attention on the event is intended and the organizers
hope that not only are they able to raise funding, but to also raise global
awareness about some of the major global humanitarian crises.
As for the specifics on this year’s tournament, there is no final total yet on
the amount of money raised this year, but John Hennigan took home the top prize
in the event after a final faceoff with poker pro Micheal Degusta. GambleCraft
will shortly release an update with the total funds raised as well as any new
charity events hosted by the land and online casino poker gambling industries. |
