Arguing Against Online Casinos Without the Facts - 2

The Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative (SSIGI) released information and statements this week that shed some more light on why HR 5767 was defeated and about Bachus’ scare tactics. Bachus cited several impressive statistics in his arguments against the licensing and regulation of the online casino gambling industry in the U.S. His markup of the bill specifically quoted research that allegedly indicated that one-third of college students who gamble at the online casinos attempt suicide. New information though from the research organization that published the research has now come forward to publicly assert that Bachus not only misinterpreted the organization’s online gambling research, but then inaccurately elaborated on the information and misrepresented the research statistics in his attack on HR 5767.

A professor at McGill University in Quebec, Dr. Jeffery L. Derevensky, has spoken out in defense of the research study and to publicly support Frank’s efforts to legalize and regulate the online casino gambling industry. In response to questions from the SSIGI, Derevensky commented on Bachus’ assertion. He notes, “This assertion, which is reportedly based upon our empirical research, is not predicated upon any factual evidence. None of the studies conducted with adolescents or college students, to the best of my knowledge, have looked at a connection between Internet wagering and suicide attempts.”

So this begs the question, where did the statistics come from? Bachus’ presented the House Committee with the online casino gambling research statistics in a manner that did not allow the veracity of the statements to be challenged at the time. What it comes down to is the fact that Bachus and other Republicans are now using scare tactics and misinformation in last-ditch efforts to protect the controversial UIGEA. There is little doubt in the minds of many analysts that it is only a matter of time before the U.S. passes legislation to legalize and regulate the online casino gambling industry.
