New Poker Venture is Questionably Legal

The World Poker Tour brand has announced a new venture that would take the land-based poker gambling brand into the world of online casinos legislation and regulation – though not entirely. The circumstances are tricky in the United States because of U.S. legislation that restrict online casinos gambling financial transactions and targets internet gambling companies that offer services to players in the U.S. The latest idea though from the WPT brand would be more of an online sweepstakes format and will run only in certain U.S. and Canadian States.

The WPT brand has been instrumental in a movement to make land and online casinos poker classified as a sport rather than lumped in with gambling like slot machines and other games of pure chance. And though land-poker is quite legal in the United States there are still some very fine lines governing online poker gambling and related activities. But the sticky situation has deterred WPT from announcing a new Web site that will allow consumers to login for free and register to win up to $100,000 each month in prize monies.

The Web site is registered as a sweepstakes format site that allows players a chance to enter to win randomly chosen winners. But because of the specifications of the sweepstakes and the varying state laws and regulations, the online casinos type sweepstakes site will only be available in 38 of the 50 U.S. states – Canada will also allow individual states to determine if the site is open to residents. Though the CEO at WPT has commented that there is billions to be made in internet and online casinos gambling, he contends that the new ClubWPT.com site has been approved by the U.S. Department of Justice and will still make the company decent monies.
