Germany Ignores the Commission
Several weeks have now passed since Germany passed a highly controversial online
casinos gambling ban in Germany that specifically targets gambling companies
located outside of Germany. The European Commission has been in negotiations and
discussions with Germany for many months to no avail, the country defied
requests from the Commission and instead passed protectionist legislation that
goes counter to EU principles. The concept of free trade between the members of
the European Union is the key to keeping the Union successful.
Basically, Germany currently has a government run online casinos betting and
gambling monopoly that handles all of the internet gambling related activities
in the country. The German government then gets a share of the profits if the
gambling is run through a state controlled monopoly.
The European Commission has spent months negotiating with the German government
to reverse protectionist legislation, but instead the country passed even
stricter laws that protect the country’s online casinos gambling monopoly. Now
that Germany has taken this last definitive step in violation of EU trade
agreements, the Commission plans to react quickly with legal action targeted
specifically at Germany’s online casinos gambling and betting legislation.
The majority of the other countries and online casinos companies operating in
the EU support the impending legal action against Germany. And according to a
source in a Reuters news report, “The decision is expected to be adopted by the
Commission next Thursday."
