Dissention in the Finnish Government
It’s true that everyone topic has some sort of opposition, and that is certainly
the case for the emerging online casinos gambling and poker industry in Finland.
A small percentage of Finnish gamblers are turning to the internet, and more
specifically foreign gambling companies, for internet gambling. Just last week
two Ministers within the country have differing approaches to handling reports
that indicate that online casinos gambling in the country is increasing. Stefan
Willin, the Minister for Culture and Sport is calling for a state run online
poker monopoly to operate in Finland. At the same time though, the Minster of
Social Affairs and Health cited a new proposal that would eliminate and ban
online casinos and internet poker in favor of increasing the country’s Lotteries
Act.
A decision is certainly a long way off for this country considering that the
Finnish government has only just begun to accumulate research about the
industry, but the preliminary discussions have begun. Scandinavia is actually
undergoing a decent amount of discussion on this topic across several countries.
And in fact, it seems to be a global trend – countries that have no firm
position on online casinos gambling are now faced with an extremely pervasive
industry that is hard to block out because of the nature of the internet. Even
in the powerful United States, the country has not managed to completely
eliminate online casinos from offering services to U.S. gamblers.
As for the current dissenting opinions in the Finnish government, the Minister
of Social Affairs and Health is looking toward strengthening the Lotteries Act
rather than adding another questionable sector of the gambling industry – online
casinos are only beginning to gain a better reputation for controls and safety
mechanisms. A major concern right now is eliminating the ability for minors to
access internet gambling sites and gambling in the nation’s lottery? |
