Challenge to Conventional Wisdom
There is a long-held belief in the online casinos gambling industry (and land
gambling as well for that matter) that problem gambling is a degenerative
disorder – problem gamblers only get worse over time if left to their own
devices. A new study from the Harvard Medical School actually challenges this
long-held belief and instead contends that problem gambling is actually a
dynamic disorder – it fluctuates over time and can actually fix itself – that
problem gambling is in fact not permanent. The results are published through the
Canadian Journal of Psychiatry and the paper reviews the looks at the Harvard
Medical School’s several longitudinal studies into problem online casinos
gambling.
The studies into problem gambling are relatively new and as such, the research
paper notes that the “findings challenge many common beliefs about the course of
gambling-related problems and disorders. Correcting such misconceptions is
particularly important to youthful fields of inquiry, such as the study of
disordered gambling."
The researchers found that "although it might be tempting to assume that
stability or progressive worsening characterizes disordered gambling,
longitudinal study of classification patterns does not support this conclusion."
The exponential growth in new gambling mediums, like the online casinos gambling
industry, partially contributed to the growing interest in problem gambling. |
