Strong Online Casinos Opponent
The internet gambling debate in the United States is one of the most heated
climates in the history of the industry. The U.S.’s Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act is supported by a few powerful politicians (mostly Republicans
really) and backed by groups that benefit from having no internet gambling
revenue going to the online casinos – sports organizations, fantasy sports
leagues, and state run horserace betting companies. In 2007 these anti-online
casinos gambling groups lobbied hard to fight groups seeking the neutralization
of the current internet gambling ban.
The National Basketball Association (NBA) is specifically against the
legalization of online casinos gambling and internet sports betting. The NBA is
just one of the groups paying lobbying firms to fight against groups like the
Players Poker Alliance (PPA) and others that are looking to license and regulate
the internet gambling industry.
Right now the U.S.’s online casinos ban is relatively effective – internet
gamblers have a very difficult time collecting winnings from the gambling sites.
The UIGEA does not target the individual gamblers, but rather the financial
institutions. Banking and financial institutions in the United States are not
allowed to process any payments from internet gambling companies. There are ways
around the ban such as untraceable cash cards and the such, but most of the
gambling industry save a few companies have vacated the U.S market.
The NBA supports the UIGEA and according to company figures the Association paid
US $330,000 in 2007 to the McGuirewoods Consulting firm to lobby against online
casinos gambling and sports gambling – basically lobbying to keep the current
bans firmly in place. |
