Protecting the Online Casinos Players
Actually, the state governments that currently tout a state gambling monopoly
protecting their own revenues at the take of other online casinos gambling
companies. Countries like Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands all have internet
gambling bans in place for all foreign gambling operators. The argument for the
protectionist legislation almost always centers on protecting online casinos
players from criminal activity and problem and underage gambling – but in fact
the EU member states are protecting a hefty exclusive portion of the revenue
from the gambling operations.
All of this could come to an end very soon if the European Commissioner, Charlie
McCreevy, begins to really exert increased pressure on these governments to
comply with EU principles of free trade and movement of services between the
member states. Although the Commissioner has requested that Sweden end the
legislative ban on foreign online casinos, the country seems to be waiting for
action from the European Court of Justice before it will actually take action to
fix the problem.
But some are getting fed up with how long is has taken the Commission and the
Commissioner to get down to brass tacks with the Swedish government. In fact,
the Swedish newspapers are now urging McCreevy to force Sweden into compliance.
The pressure thus far against the online casinos monopoly in Sweden has had
little visible effect on the Swedish government and they have not budged from
their current operations on the Svenske Spel government run gambling monopoly.
And though the country is violating EU principles, who can blame Sweden for
reaping the exclusive revenue for as long as possible while running one of the
safest, and most secure, and technologically advanced gambling companies in the
world? |
