More Than a Million Supporters

The Poker Players Alliance is an U.S. pressure group that has set its sights on legalizing online casinos poker in the U.S. once again. The PPA was very active last year in lobbying in Washington and state representatives to get information to the politicians about the current online casinos ban and how it is negatively affecting the U.S. on many levels. Last year the group also had a goal of one million PPA members – and though the group is still shy of the one million members mark, the company has raised the goal to 1.5 million members all banning together to bring online poker back to the U.S.

John Pappas is the Executive Director at the PPA, and he outlined what 2008 will look like for the pressure group. In addition to the 1.5 million poker player supporters goal, the PPA is expanding online casinos lobbying efforts in Washington DC and beginning a State Directors program that is expected to bring renewed focus to the existing and new members.

And as far as what specific online casinos measures that the group is currently lobbying for and supporting – the three main contenders are still pushing forward. They include the most popular of the three measures to bring online casinos back into the U.S., Congressman Barney Frank’s efforts to neutralize the UIGEA through licensing and regulation in the industry. Pappas noted, "We are working heavily on fine tuning Congressman Frank's bill to overturn the UIGEA, and regulation of the industry."

In addition to Frank’s bill, Pappas commented that the PPA is "also supporting Representative Shelly Berkley's continued drive for a study into the proper action of the United States regarding online gaming.” Wexler’s bill is still viable but has less enthusiasm from most of the online casinos gambling and poker industry. Wexler is specifically looking to pass a court ruing that considers poker a skill based game rather than a game of chance (this would then circumvent the online gambling ban).
