Hidden Online Casinos Felony
The latest Massachusetts proposal from Governor Deval
Patrick is highly controversial and has caused outcry and lobbying action from a
variety of interest groups. Governor Patrick’s proposal would bring three land
casino resorts to the state, restrict tribal casinos, and make online casinos
gambling a felony offense or Massachusetts residents. And though Patrick’s
proposal has been met with extensive criticism from the online gambling
industry, others speculate that Patrick’s proposal also grossly overstates the
amount of yearly revenue and jobs that the three proposed will bring to the
state.
What many in the online casinos industry find so offensive about Patrick’s
proposal is the fact that the clause concerning internet gambling is hidden
within the proposal and would make internet gambling a felony offense for the
gambler. Even the controversial Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act
doesn’t make individual gamblers directly liable for gambling activities.
Governor Patrick’s proposal is essentially designed to carve out a very specific
and controlled land gambling industry in the form of three casino resorts. The
other elements and restrictions in the proposal are put in place to ensure that
all of the state gambling revenue is funneled through the three proposed land
casinos.
Patrick has been hit with criticism from the online casino lobbying groups, as
well as gambling opponents and the Economic Development Committee. But support
from the labor unions and a few other politicians is enough support that
Governor Patrick is pushing the proposal very hard lately and has even pressured
state politicians to consider placing a deadline on the debates. |
