Blacklisting Online Casino Pages
Internet gamblers in Australia might find a surprise next time they go to a
favored online casino gambling site – the Australian Communications and Media
Authority (ACMA) has released a list of banned gambling Web pages. While this is
actually not new, the ACMA often sends content filtering companies and internet
service providers a list of banned sites, this year ACMA had an unprecedented
number of gambling Web pages on the list, in fact 800 web pages, enough that
AMCA created a separate list for the online casino gambling pages that were now
blacklisted.
Basically, the Australian government uses the blacklist as a way to censor
unfavorable content for Australians – sites on the black range from pornography
to any site suspected of criminal or illegal activity. The government uses the
blacklist as a way to effectively block potentially harmful sites completely.
The banned URLs are sent to the content filtering companies and all of the ISP’s
and at that point the government is able to totally control what the citizens
can access on the Web.
The list stems from widespread complaints about illegal gambling Web pages late
last year (2007) – those complaints have finally been resolved and resulted in
the newly released blacklist. When ACMA was questioned about the extensive list
of more than 800 online casino and gambling related Web sites, ACMA apparently
stated that the list represents "illegal gambling websites that had been
identified by the federal Government as inappropriate," says an unnamed industry
insider. According to ACMA, the pages are “unsuitable for public consumption.” |
