Testing the UK's Commission
The Gambling Act of 2005 was the UK’s first step toward a more liberal online
casino gambling industry. The legislation and new policies within the Act were
implement in September 2007 and one of the biggest new developments was the
appointment of the UK’s Gambling Commission. The Commission is responsible for
monitoring the UK’s online casinos, ensuring that the companies are following
policies, and, recently, investigating rumors of corruption within the
sportsbetting sector.
The allegedly suspect betting patterns that took place just this month during a
UK snooker championship game have some in the online casino gambling industry
worried about the integrity of the game as well as the bets. This latest
allegation comes right on the heels of an investigation just a couple of months
ago that also involved illegal betting. The Gambling Commission has been forced
to contend with these new developments and has stated that it will handle the
investigation into the alleged corruption.
This is a new area for the Gambling Commission; thus far it has been essentially
smooth sailing with the online casinos and upholding legislation. The most
difficult and trying issue has been the advertisement regulations. But the
corruption reports within the sportsbetting industry could potentially have a
very serious and negative impact on the integrity of the UK gambling industry
and the UK Gambling Commission is compelled to not only investigate the
corruption claims, but to also then ensure that new protocols are put in place
to continue the safety of betting and gambling. |
