EU Reaction for Online Casinos
Online casinos all over the world are expecting that the latest news and
developments in the US Department of Justice’s negotiations with internet
gambling companies will have the European Commission stepping up the pressure on
the US government. The online casino gambling situation has really hit upon an
exposed nerve in the international community – the outgoing US administration
seems to operate under the assumption that any policy that benefits the US okay
to enforce. The ongoing outrage and controversy over the UIGEA and the pre-UIGEA
prosecution has had no effect on the US policy or interactions with foreign
governments – it’s like the government is operating in a vacuum without any care
of the affects on other countries.
The European Union is expected to step up pressure on the US government to cease
the continued prosecution of foreign online casinos for pre-UIGEA activities
until more dialogue takes place between the European Commission and the US
Department of Justice. And while the Remote Gaming Association is calling on the
EU government to intervene through the World Trade Organization, the US’s
arrogance has even threatened to undermine the authority of the WTO; the WTO’s
previous verdict on the Antigua situation fell on nearly deaf US ears.
So what is the rest of the world and the international online casino gambling
industry to do? The answer may lie within the new administration. With a new
president just on the door-step of the White House new policies and a new
attitude toward foreign policy may smooth some of these ruffled feathers. In the
meantime, the EU is expected to simply continue pressuring the DoJ for a
temporary stop to negotiations related to the Wire Act. |
