Post Gives a Go
The online casino gambling industry is not being spared at all this month – the
Sixty Minutes special on the internet poker cheating scandals aired just a
couple of weeks ago. Now add to that the fact that the Washington Post jointly
produced that episode of the program and you have a whole lot of media attention
on an issue that the company involved, frankly, just wants to see disappear. The
Post has written a couple of articles on issues related to the two major
cheating scandals – a background piece on the owner of Tokwiro, and now the
latest article is an in depth look at the security of the online casinos and
internet gambling sites.
The scandal involving Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet rocked the industry hard
because a cheating scandal of this size and magnitude (roughly $20 million) had
never occurred before in the history of the industry. The situation involved the
two internet poker sites but the effects of the media attention have included
online casinos and, in fact, all forms of internet betting and gambling. The
Post article is five pages and really looks at details of the situation and
highlights some of the information presented in the Sixty Minutes program while
also providing a fresh take on the exact nature of the online casino gambling
industry as well as how the gamblers themselves have created a unique online
environment.
The internet has become self-policing to a huge extent – censorship is nearly
impossible so it is up to the online savvy generation to ensure that everything
is legitimate. In this case, there is no telling how many online casino poker
gamblers would have continued to be victimized if the internet poker community
hadn’t uncovered the cheating scandal. |
