Poker is Popular Again
The land and online casino gambling industry is growing in popularity – at least
the poker sector of this industry continues to grow rapidly. Lycos has revealed
the data for the 2008 most popular words used in the search engines…and its
little surprise that poker has made it to the tops once again. This is the third
year running that poker has taken top honors as the most searched for term. And,
interestingly enough other popular gambling related terms like “online casinos,”
“internet betting,” and others didn’t even make the top ten. Many in the
industry speculate that the rampant international media attention given to the
WSOP is part of the reason that poker has been so searched for on the internet.
Lycos has issued these results for years now and it’s really interesting that
only around the time that the United States banned offshore online casinos and
poker sites from accessing the US market that gamblers began to search for the
term “poker” so heavily. Internet poker gambling is getting tougher each month
it seems for US gamblers – the UIGEA blocked the banks from processing
transactions with the online casino and poker gambling sites.
The online poker side of the equation is just one part of the situation. Land
poker gambling has also taken off a lot all over the world. Reports in the past
several months note that the Asian markets are beginning to show an increased
interest in land and internet poker. Add to that the increased media attention
on not only the WSOP, but other major poker tournaments and even the poker
cheating scandals that rocked the industry just last year. |
