A Litany of Complaints: 1
The US Department of Justice has created another massive media circus that holds
the online casino gambling controversy at its nexus. The internet gambling issue
has become fuel for fodder in the world media because of all of the hypocritical
and ethically questionable methods that the US officials have used to push their
agenda on the rest of the world – despite the fact that new policies directly
contradict international trade treaties.
This latest frenzy was spurred by the announcement that one of the founding
members of Party Gaming pled guilty on Wire Act charges and agreed to pay the US
DoJ $300 million in penalties. Although this is a major issue with the online
casinos the fact that Anurag Dikshit pled guilty is just the tip of the ice berg
– the gambling companies are now refocused on the half a dozen other
questionable decisions and actions from the US officials.
It’s really hard to say what is tops on the list of complaints from the foreign
online casino gambling industry – perhaps the UIGEA and all of drama surrounding
that piece of flawed legislation. Not only was the UIGEA pushed through as an
11th hour addition, but then the Republicans further complicated the issue once
again with the midnight drop of the UIGEA enforcement regulations – the
regulations that were highly controversial and that members of Congress were
attempting to block from passage. But that’s just the domestic government issues
with the UIGEA, online casinos are rightly upset over the fact that the UIGEA
has carve-outs for US based betting companies for the US horserace industry –
the UIGEA blocks any foreign competition in this market. |
