Liberalizing Betting in the EU
The online casino betting industry has come under some intense scrutiny in the
past several months because of some betting scandals and rumors that threaten
the integrity of sporting events. Illegal betting is a real concern for European
sports according to Michel Platini, president of the Union of European Football
Associations. Cheating within in any sector of the internet gambling industry is
quite negative, but the impacts within the sports betting industry is far worse
than cheating at, say, the online casinos. With more and more illegal betting
taking place on a world-wide level both on land and through the internet it’s
increasingly important for stronger regulations and protocol to be in place.
Platini recently expressed specific concerns about illegal land and online
betting coming out of Asia in increasingly high numbers. One of the ways to
effectively combat the illegal sportsbetting is through sports police according
to Platini. The online casino gambling issue is in the process of some intense
legal issues, and it seems that sportsbetting is falling into that same category
– new regulations and the liberalization of the European betting market means
that this transition time can be very dangerous if it’s taken advantage of by
illegal and dishonest betting.
Platini specifically calls for the Council of Europe to provide a legal
framework that will allow a special taskforce of Sports police to address and
prosecute illegal sportsbetting activities throughout Europe. The way that the
current regulations are structured there is no clear path toward prosecution and
no way to ensure that ethics in sports remains a top priority. |
