Fighting the Charges
Poker’s skill versus luck debate rears its head again as five US land poker
gamblers are arguing their case in the Charleston courts. The skill versus luck
debate has caused debate and court rulings all over the world in regards to the
online casino gambling industry and now these five gamblers are taking it back
to its basics and fighting charges that they incurred after a gambling raid on a
private home. Charleston police raided a home poker game nearly two years ago
and charged all involved with illegal gambling activities at an unlicensed
facility. The five that have fought prosecution and refused to accept either the
charges or the penalties are now gearing up for the looming court date.
The entire basis of the defenses argument revolves around the skill versus luck
debate. Poker undeniably require that the land or online casino poker gambler
have a certain level of skill – the question though then becomes – how much
skill is required and does luck play a larger role in the game. Most countries
use the rule that games of predominately chance and luck are classified as
gambling while predominately skill based games are largely unregulated and do
not fall under the same auspice.
Now though there is the question of whether or not the five defendants have much
of a chance of winning the case. Because of the surges within the online casino
gambling industry the skill versus luck debate has come up in a handful of
courts from all over the world. Unfortunately, most of the time, the courts rule
that poker may require skills to win, but chance is often determined to play a
larger factor in the game. The court case is pending and there is no telling
which way the case will go as of yet. |
