Rumors Likely False
Initial reports in the online casino gambling industry indicated that one of the
founding members of Party Gaming planned to plead guilty to pre-UIGEA gambling
activities in the US. A statement from Party Gaming however asserts that while
Anurag Dikshit is scheduled to appear in court in relation to the ongoing
charges and negotiations, he is not planning to plead guilty to any criminal
charges in the case. The statement also notes that Party Gaming as a company
also has no intention of pleading guilty to the illegal online caisno gambling
charges that step from alleged violations of the Wire Act.
The online casinos and internet gambling companies were abuzz earlier this week
with the news that Dikshit planned to plead guilty to charges and pay nearly US
$200 million in penalties. This rumor though appears to be largely untrue – the
only factual part being that Dikshit will appear in a New York Court later this
week and that Party Gaming is still working toward a resolution with the US DoJ
on the entire situation.
The company statement did not really go into specific details but rather refuted
some of the misinformation that was disseminated earlier this week by the
Financial Times. The statement also commented on the alleged $200 million
penalty sum, noting that when a settlement is reached between the online casino
gambling company and the DoJ, the sum is likely “significantly below” the
alleged GBP 300 million stated in the FT article.
Interestingly enough though, the FT times stands by the assertion that Dikshit
plans to plead guilty to Wire Act charges despite the Party Gaming statement to
the contrary.
