Designed for Protection
The recently released gambling report that included recommendations for the
Swedish gambling market were largely a disappointment to the online casinos and
foreign gambling companies. Criticism of the commission’s report center on the
fact that although the online casinos provided input in the report, the
commission chose to issue recommendations that still put the Swedish gambling
monopoly and protecting private funds as a top priority. The state run monopoly
is hugely profitable for the Swedish government – more profitable than would be
an open or licensed gambling market. Additionally, it seems that Sweden is still
in the mindset that the country ought to do just enough reformation on gambling
policies to ensure that the European Commssion will not bring them up for a
trial in the European Court of Justice.
Online casino gambling activities have really surged all over the world – and
with the increased popularity of both land and internet gambling, problem
gambling has also become a bit of an issue. Addictive gambling is one of those
things that is a serious blight on the internet gambling industry. Socially
responsible online casinos and gambling companies have worked on instituting
policies and practices that maximize the services available to problem gamblers.
State monopolies like Svenske Spel though take the problem gambling argument one
step further and argue that state monopolies better protect the internet
gamblers from gambling addiction and exploitation.
This is an old argument though and one that unfortunately the Swedish government
is once again likely to claim. There is no indication that state monopolies are
any safer than a regulated online casino gambling industry. Essentially, the
Swedish authorities, even if they do open the market to competitive betting
companies, stand by protectionist legislation that maximizes profits for the
government.
