Criticizing the Regulations
The recent attention on the online poker cheating scandals has raised some
really big questions in the industry…the Washington Post this week was more than
willing to put out a fresh view on the industry and the situation at hand. The
five page Post article covered a whole lot of information; one part, though, of
particular interest was the writer, Gaul’s, thoughts on the regulation of the
online casinos and internet gambling sites in the US. Gaul is hugely critical of
the current state of US regulations concerning the industry – the current lack
of regulatory framework and legislation means that there is no checks and
balances system in the industry and the internet gamblers themselves are falling
victim to the unregulated environment.
Gaul examined the two online casino poker sites in question – both sites are
owned and operated by Tokwiro Enterprises and basically operate outside of the
US influence and power. Without clear legislation and regulations for the online
casinos and poker companies, many companies choose to remain servicing the US
market. The only problem with that though, is that the some of the companies
remaining in the industry are of a lower quality than many of the popular online
casinos operating for the European and international markets – the big names in
the industry have pulled out of the market.
Now, there are certainly still great choices for US online casino and poker
gamblers – there are several choice sites that are licensed out of a respectable
jurisdiction and have completely transparent operations. Tokwiro though, and the
two online poker sites it operates are less than transparent. Tokwiro is
licensed by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission – a jurisdiction that, while
licensing several popular gambling sites, is far from considered a highly secure
and safe jurisdiction. Then add to that the fact that both of the sites involved
in the scandal are operated out of a shopping center in Costa Rica, and you have
a situation that is entirely outside of the US’s control.
