Courts Aren't Having It
Some people just don’t seem to get the message – even when it’s a huge message
coming from the global online casino gambling and betting industry. Graham
Calvert is a UK gambler who lost several million pounds to the UK bookie William
Hill over the course of several months. Calvert has made headlines because he
lost the millions to Will Hill through online and telephone betting and yet then
went on to attempt a GBP 2 million lawsuit against the company. Calvert’s case
caused some ripples in the industry at first as online casinos and gambling
companies feared that the courts might side with the problem gambling.
But that was not to be the case. The first courts that heard the case threw out
the case – and now that Calvert’s lawyers have appealed the previous decision,
the international online casino gambling industry is once again faced with this
sadly laughable situation. The appeal was rejected this time as well – who knows
though if that will stop Calvert from further attempts. The courts basically
found that Will Hill could not be held responsible for Calvert’s addiction to
the land and online casino gambling sites considering the company had done due
diligence in suspending Calvert’s account.
One of the more interesting facts about this latest appeal – Calvert was not
actually present in the courts, rather his lawyer spoke on his behalf because
Calvert is facing a two year sentence for criminal charges related to possession
of cocaine and firearms. This latest update on the ongoing Calvert saga is
really just a blip in the radar of the online casino gambling industry now that
the courts have stood by Will Hill’s actions. |
