Challenging the Monopolies
The EU online casino gambling situation just gets stickier by the day as the
issue of state monopolies continues to build tension between the foreign
internet gambling companies and the state sanctioned monopolies. Many of the
online casinos, as well as the European Commission assert that the EU principles
and policies advocate and open and accessible internet gambling market between
all EU member-states already allowing types of gambling. Several prominent EU
countries, though, are unwilling to bend on the issue – they run a successful
land and online gambling market and have no plans to lose the profit from the
state-run monopolies any time soon.
But the ask the online casinos and betting companies – they too are willing to
put their foot down. The Swedish gambling market has caused a fair bit of
problems for the Betsson, a Swedish internet gambling company. Betsson opened a
land betting shop in the Stockholm earlier this year despite the fact the
government has forbidden any company, foreign or domestic, to compete with the
state’s online casino gambling monopoly. Betsson’s land betting shop was
challenged in the courts and Betsson lost the case – but the company plans to
succeed in the long-run and announced it will not back down.
Betsson has placed two appeals to the higher courts to reconsider the previous
ruling – both of those appeals were rejected. But an open land and online casino
gambling market is worth fighting for and Betsson released information that the
company is now taking the appeal process even higher in the court system – to
the Administrative Court of Appeal. Betsson plans to take this case as far as it
takes to win. |
