Betting Gets a Break
There is good news and bad news for those companies looking to legally enter the
Swedish gaming market. The good news is that the Swedish authorities seem to
recognize that they are in a precarious situation as they continue to enforce
the government’s pro-monopoly laws. A public commission has study the Swedish
gambling market, the functioning of the state monopoly, Svenske Spel, and the
negative and positives associated with continuing the ban of foreign online
casinos and gambling companies.
The commission reported their findings and recommendations to the
authorities…and the findings were pretty positive on many levels. The commission
recommended that the state disbar parts of the existing monopoly in favor of a
more open and free online betting market in particular. On the flip side, the
commission agreed with the monopoly on online casinos and internet poker
gambling on account of the safety issue – these two forms of internet gambling
have more potential and risk for problem gambling.
Foreign online casinos and gambling companies will surely find some relief in
the fact that there is at least some discussion occurring between Swedish
authorities concerning the state-run monopoly. The European Commission has been
very vocal in their assertions that the continued presence of a Swedish gambling
monopoly goes against the EU policies of free and fair trade between EU
member-states. Many foreign gambling sites have been vying for entry into the
lucrative Swedish gambling market and it seems as though the time may be coming
close now that the government is more open to discussions. |
