Bad Day for Land Casinos
The land gambling industry in Russia has been on the edge of closing for more
than a year now – the Russian government has been slowly pushing the industry
out of the mainstream. The latest news though is the biggest push yet – over
1,000 land casinos from Moscow have closed their doors for operation as a result
of the push to limit the land gambling industry. The closures have taken place
over the past 18 months and the actual numbers are much higher than many in the
industry expected. At a time when the online casinos are more prominent and
prevalent in the global gambling industry than ever before, it comes as a bit of
a surprise that the land gambling industry has been so negatively targeted.
Former Russian President Vladmir Putin approved the legislation that forced land
casinos out of the major cities and into the more remote areas of Russia. With
the new law firmly in place over the past 18 months, the land gambling venues
have been forced to close their doors for operations – and many of the smaller
venues have stayed closed rather than moving to the approved remote locations.
The law was designed and intended as a way to curb the increasing prevalence of
problem and addictive gambling habits in Russians – some argue this is a growing
trend because of the globalization of the online casino gambling industry.
Some critics though have criticized the law because it will only drive gamblers
to online casinos and illegal gambling venues. On top of that, the cities and
regional governments have now lost out on a very large source of income –
gambling taxes accounted for a large part of the fiscal budgets in big cities
like Moscow. |
